Hawaiian musical legend Willie K passed away Monday evening, 18 May 2020, at his Maui home following a 2-year battle with lung cancer. He was 59 years old. Willie K (full last name Kahaiali’i) began playing music as a boy. His professional music career took off in the 1990s. Over the years he recorded over a dozen albums under multiple labels, and also worked as a producer, promoter, and actor. Willie K was the winner of multiple prestigious Nā Hōkū Awards and received the Hawai’i Academy of Recording Arts Lifetime Achievement Award in 2018.
