August is Pedestrian Safety Month

This message was released by the Hawaii County Police Department (with a few notes from me at the end): August is Pedestrian Safety Month and as part of a statewide effort to increase awareness about pedestrian safety, Hawai‘i Police Department is offering safety tips to motorists and pedestrians. After the Kona Low - please report damages and/or file claims

For those of us living on the island many have suffered damages and outages. Hawaii County are or were collecting damage reports here https://hawaii-county-civil-defense-agency-hawaiicountygis.hub.arcgis.com/. This is just for assessment, hopefully to prevent at least some further occurrences - at least that is my hope. 75 years ago today - as the Hawaii Tribune Herald says "A Wall of Water"

Today is the 75th anniversary of the 1946 Tsunami. An earthquake between 7.8 and 8.6 in the Aleutian Islands off Alaska happened during the night and the first wave made it to Hilo by about 7 a.m.. People who started working early were already at work, like fishermen and sugar plantation workers, a lot of the rest were getting ready for work or school. That first wave was estimated by eyewitnesses as 35-50 feet high. It destroyed the Hilo waterfront and low lying areas including the 'new town' Shinmachi and 159 people died, 25 of those in Laupahoehoe. The tsunami destroyed several railroad ...

Find your COVID vaccine in Hawaii County

Being 65 I was a bit taken aback when comorbidities were completely eliminated from category 1b in Hawaii and ages were sliced into smaller pieces. Eventually vaccination opened up for 65+ and so I started looking. As at least Hilo Medical Center has opened up pre-registration further this looks like a good time to share the information I found. As I had time to check: as of this morning (3/24) the Pfizer vaccine is out of stock at all the pharmacies covered by vaccinefinder, Moderna is available at Downtown Hilo Longs, and possibly at KTA in Waimea and Waikoloa (both of these have 2 entries and one shows it in stock and one out of stock for each of them). J&J is available at Longs Ponahawai, Target, Puainako, Pahoa and Pahala.
